PHOENIX - The Phoenix Zoo is showing off a new addition to its herd of Grevy’s zebras.
The male foal was born on January 19 to Masika and Punda, weighing in at 100 pounds.
He is exploring his new home in the Africa Trail at the zoo and is playing with another male foal, Utambo, born just a couple of months earlier, according to zoo officials.
Zookeepers let mom choose the name for her new son.
She got to choose from three bags of treats each labeled with a different name. The choices she had included Pembe, which means “horn” in Swahili, Bakari, which is Swahili for “one who will succeed, and Akili, which is Swahili for “cleverness.”
Wednesday morning she chose the bag with Bakari tagged on the outside.
Zoo officials say Grevy’s zebras are endangered with less than 2,500 left in the wild due to loss of habitat, competition with livestock and poaching.
Grevy’s zebras are found only in northern Kenya and south eastern Ethopia.
