PHOENIX - A Valley woman who was denied work because of her pregnancy finally saw justice in court.

A jury granted her a more than $7,000 settlement.

In 2006, Belinda Murillo went in for a job interview at the Subway near 16 th Street and Thomas Road.

“I never thought just because someone is pregnant they wouldn’t be able to get a job,” said Murillo.

But after a phone call to the EEOC, she knew what was said to her during that interview was against the law.

“Right away he asked me if I was pregnant and I said yes.  He immediately told me that he couldn’t’ hire me because I was pregnant and to come back after I had the baby,” said Murillo.

But now, six years later, she feels justice has been served.  A jury found subway at fault granting her a settlement and is now required to change its hiring practices.

Subway Restaurants of Arizona issued the following statement Tuesday in response to this case:

“The manager involved in this case resigned almost six years ago – in 2006. We have policies and procedures in place to prevent situations like this, and we take great pride in our diverse workforce.”
