PHOENIX - Voters have approved a proposition to overhaul Phoenix's ailing employee-pension system, potentially saving about $600 million over 25 years.
The pension-reform proposal was among three on Tuesday's special election ballot. Unofficial vote totals posted to the city's website show they all were approved by a majority vote.
Proposition 201 will reform the city's retirement system for new employees excluding police officers, firefighters and elected officials. The changes will raise the retirement age and require employees to contribute more toward their pensions.
Proposition 202 allows the city to be more aggressive in how it invests pension funds. Proposition 300 allows private security guards to issue civil citations to mass-transit riders.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Justice Department monitored Guadalupe's municipal election to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, prohibiting discrimination.
