PHOENIX - A Phoenix police officer has been arrested for stealing money from suspected drug dealers.
According to Phoenix police, 23-year-old James Wren stole an estimated $100,000 over the course of at least three different thefts.
The 2-year police veteran was apparently working with a friend outside of the Phoenix police force to track drug sales.
Police Spokesperson Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the officer then used that information to intervene during active drug sales.
According to Thompson, Wren would pull up to suspected drug deals in his marked patrol car, wearing his uniform, and demand money.
He then left, apparently making no arrests.
Wren faces four felony counts, including conspiracy, attempted theft, attempted money laundering, and charges for being a public servant involved in a criminal syndicate.
Wren has resigned from duty and is currently in jail, Thompson said. Wren has also apparently admitted his involvement in the above crimes.
The investigation into his arrest started as a tip last week from Avondale police, Thompson said.
According to court documents, Wren was caught in an undercover operation in which he was recorded on video and audio talking about the past thefts and planning future ones.
Wren has several family members who remain involved with the Phoenix Police Department. His father is a retired sergeant, and several other family members are said to be acting in civilian roles with the force.
He is being held on $90,000 bond.
