PHOENIX - A Phoenix woman is behind bars after her 1-year-old child fell from a second-story balcony Monday.
According to a police report, officers were called to a home near 57th Avenue and Thomas Road around 12:50 p.m. to investigate a call of a child falling from a balcony.
When officers arrived, city workers directed authorities to the apartment where the child fell from.
According to the police report, the workers tried to get the woman living in home, 23-year-old Elizabeth Montijo, to call for help, but she refused to make any calls saying a friend was coming over to take the baby to the hospital.
When officers entered Montijo's apartment, they smelled marijuana. Police said Montijo admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day.
Police said they found open bottles of alcohol, prescription pills in bottles on the floor and the glass door to the balcony open.
Authorities said they believe the child crawled out the open door and fell 10 to 12 feet from the balcony.
Phoenix firefighters transported the child to the hospital with no major injuries.
Authorities arrested Montijo on suspicion of child abuse and possession and use of marijuana.
