PHOENIX - A 50-year-old man is behind bars after stabbing his roommate to death with a knife Sunday afternoon in Phoenix.

Phoenix police spokesman Tommy Thompson said Robert Guillen Garcia stabbed his 56-year-old roommate around noon Sunday at their apartment near Roosevelt and 32nd streets.

Thompson said Garcia told the manager of the facility that his roommate came at him with a knife. Garcia said he took the knife away and stabbed the man, who died at the scene.

When police arrived, Thompson said Garcia would not speak to investigators, became combative, and tried to escape after being taken into custody.

During the course of their investigation, detectives developed probable cause that Garcia had murdered his roommate and he was booked into the Maricopa County Jail for 2nd degree homicide and resisting arrest.

The victim's name is not being released at this time.
