PHOENIX - Police are searching for the driver of a car who ran over a man in an apartment complex and then took off.

Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said that the hit was no accident, and told ABC15 that a witness reported hearing the man scream and then saw him running.

Shortly after, that witness reported hearing a car revving up its engine and then witnessed the car strike the man.

Jesse Tate, who lives in the complex near 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road where it happened Thursday morning, said the sound was shocking.

"It was loud," he said. "I thought the air conditioner or something fell off the roof. He was hit pretty hard."

Police do not know how fast the driver was going, but the car was going fast enough to send the man flying over 30 feet, and fast enough to drive over cinder block barriers at the end of the lot.

The victim is in extremely critical condition.

Police are looking for a blue or green four-door car that was described as a larger model vehicle.
