PHOENIX - Police are looking for a suspect who knocked an elderly woman to the ground while trying to steal her purse outside a Phoenix grocery store.

According to a Silent Witness news release, the 71-year-old woman was confronted as she approached a Fry's store near 7th Avenue and Hatcher Road around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 9.

The suspect tried to take the woman's purse, causing her to fall to the ground.

She struggled to keep her purse and received abrasions to her arm and knee, according to police.

The suspect was not able to get the victim's purse and ran from the scene as bystanders began to respond to help the victim.

The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 18 and 25, 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 120-160 pounds with a thin build and wearing a backpack.

Police released surveillance photos hoping someone recognizes the suspect.
