PHOENIX - A Phoenix woman has been arrested after allegedly restraining and beating her daughter for speaking to a man.
Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said officers initially made contact with the victim Wednesday at the hospital after an assault was reported.
The 19-year-old woman said she had been assaulted by family members, including her mother, because she had been in contact with a man the family knew.
According to reports from the victim, she was struck several times Tuesday night by her father after he learned she had been speaking to the man outside her Phoenix high school.
Holmes said the victim also reported that her mother, 50-year-old Yusra Farhan, assaulted her at the family's home that night. The 19-year-old was also allegedly tied to her bed and the rope secured with a padlock.
The victim told police she was tied to the bed overnight until Wednesday morning, when she was released and allowed to go to school. She reportedly disclosed the incident to school workers and was transported to the hospital by fire crews.
During talks with officers at the hospital, Farhan reportedly admitted to striking the victim and restraining her inside their home.
As officers were taking Farhan into custody, she resisted their attempts, prompting other family members to also get involved and try to stop the officers.
More security arrived and officers were able to arrest Farhan. She was then transported to the Fourth Avenue Jail where she was booked.
No officers or family members were injured in the incident.
According to Holmes, officers have determined that the victim's father and at least one other person assaulted the victim while in the family's Phoenix home. In an attempt to defuse the situation in the hospital, officers determined only Farhan's arrest would be affected immediately.
The father and other family members could face charges for assault and interfering with the duties of law enforcement officers.
