PD: Kidnapping suspect loose after Phoenix shootout

PHOENIX - Police are searching for a kidnapping suspect after a shootout in Phoenix early Saturday.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said the incident began when Angel Padilla visited his estranged girlfriend's home near 67th Avenue and Buckeye Road, where she resides with three children.

Padilla reportedly assaulted the woman before kidnapping her from the home, and one of the children dialed 911.

According to Martos, an officer in the area attempted to stop Padilla's vehicle after he drove through a stop sign at 59th Avenue and Van Buren Street not knowing a kidnapping was under way.

Padilla then allegedly opened fire on the officer's vehicle before fleeing to the area of 51st Avenue and Holly Street, where he left his weapon in the bed of a pickup truck and took off on foot.

Another 911 call was received approximately one hour later by the female victim who said she had been released by Padilla near 43rd Avenue and Encanto Boulevard.

The officer took cover and wasn't seriously hurt but the windshield, door, hood and tires of the car were hit.

Officers located Padilla's abandoned vehicle a short time later and reportedly found an SKS rifle.
