Teen killed at park trying to stop robbery

PHOENIX - A 16-year-old is dead after a shooting in a West Phoenix park Thursday night.

Police say the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. at Marivue Park, at 55th Avenue and Osborn Road.

When officers arrived at the scene they found Andrew Murphy had suffered a gunshot injury to the upper body.

He was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Police say witnesses told investigators that the suspect had possibly committed an armed robbery in the area and was in the process of committing another when Murphy intervened on behalf of his 14-year-old sister.

The suspect, identified as an 18-year-old male, shot Murphy then fled the scene.

Officers set up a large perimeter and the suspect was found and arrested in the area of 54th Avenue and Osborn Road.

Police have not released the suspect's name, pending results of the detectives' follow up investigation.

He was booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery, and one count of aggravated assault.
