PHOENIX - Police say a man was shot and killed in a Phoenix apartment after one of the suspects got upset over a sexual encounter.
According to Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump, officers responded to a call of shots fired around 1:45 a.m. near 16th Street and Thomas Road just west of State Route 51.
Officers found the victim 19-year-old Paul Katoa of Phoenix dead in the apartment.
Crump said two suspects were arrested in the case. One is 24-year-old Shykeem Jones and the other is 18-year-old Tiana Turman.
It all started some time between Saturday to early Sunday morning when Turman was at the apartment and had a sexual encounter with a male, Crump said.
The male reportedly left the apartment quickly when the encounter was over, which angered Turman.
Turman then called her friend Jones and told him what happened, Crump said.
Around the time of the shooting, Turman reportedly approached that same apartment with Jones armed with a handgun.
Crump said the door was open and five people, including the victim Katoa, were inside.
Turman closed and locked the door as Jones told everyone to get down on the floor at gunpoint, Crump said.
Two males and two females got on the floor, but Katoa went over to Jones and struggled to get the gun from him, Crump said.
That’s when Jones reportedly shot Katoa several times.
Officers were over the location quickly in a Phoenix Police helicopter and saw the two suspects running away from the scene, Crump said. They were both detained.
Crump said the two females hid in a bedroom closet, while the two males jumped out of a second floor window in attempt to leave the scene. They were initially detained by officers when they were spotted from the helicopter.
The males that jumped out of the window sustained non-life threatening injuries from the fall.
It’s unclear which male Turman had the sexual encounter with.
Crump said Turman was booked on five counts of kidnapping and one count of first degree murder
Jones was booked on five counts of kidnapping, four counts of aggravated assault, and one count of first degree murder.
A man who often comes to the area to visit a friend says there’s plenty of violence in the area and that most people tune it out.
“I heard someone was shot and I thought that’s crazy,” said Vic Shocinski.
Residents nearby who talked to ABC15 say management has recently hired security guards but there is only so much they can do.
