PHOENIX - Maricopa County's civil service commission has upheld the firing of a former top aide to Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Capt. Joel Fox was fired in October for lying about involvement in a political-action committee that raised money to support Arpaio's 2008 re-election campaign.

He appealed the ruling to the county's Merit System Commission and a hearing officer held a 20-day trial to weigh the validity of Fox's termination.

The hearing officer recommended that Fox's termination be upheld. The Arizona Republic reports the five-member commission unanimously upheld that decision Wednesday.

Fox appeared at the hearing and continued to deny that he lied to investigators and an administrative judge about his role in the political-action committee known as SCA, or the Sheriff's Command Association.
