PHOENIX - A Valley man is in jail after he was arrested Wednesday by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies on felony animal cruelty charges.

Officials say a deputy responded to a call last week reporting animal abuse at the Phoenix home of 19-year-old Kenneth L. Tucker.

Upon arrival, a dog could be heard panting and crying in the backyard.

A deputy reportedly saw the large dog inside a small cage, with no shade or water. The deputy said the dog appeared lifeless.

After removing the dog from the cage, it took two last breaths before dying.

Authorities say the dog's body temperature was measured at 111.9 degrees, the highest the thermometer would read. Normal body temperatures for dogs range between 101 and 103 degrees.

Tucker was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on two felony animal cruelty charges and two counts of animal neglect.
