PHOENIX - Maricopa County is appealing a federal judge's order for the county to pay more than $1 million to settle a claim by Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.

Wilcox says she was damaged by the actions of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

A mediator for the county suggested in early April that the county settle Wilcox's claim for $975,000.

Earlier this month, U.S. District Court Judge Neil Wake ordered the county to pay $1,003,312 plus interest accrued until the payment is made.

The Arizona Republic says the county has filed an emergency motion to stay enforcement of the order until a decision is made on its appeal. Wake on Monday scheduled a June 26 hearing on the stay and Wilcox's attorneys have until Friday to respond
