PHOENIX - Even though he was driving, Gregory Stout said he had no idea his own mother died in the back of his van .
“We didn’t hear nothing. We didn’t hear her say anything,” said Gregory.
Lola Mae Stout died sometime during the three hour drive from Quartzsite, Arizona to Phoenix.
Gregory picked up his mother, brother, Alan Stout, and their father Alva Stout, to take them to a homeless shelter in Phoenix.
“That was my intention: try to get them into a better situation. Now, I feel like I'm being punished for it,” said Gregory.
In addition to his mother's body, police said they found 35 animals, mostly cats and dogs, stacked in crates inside the van.
Gregory said the animals belonged to his mother.
“My mother, who you tell to get rid of the animals, refuses so it just starts a never ending argument,” said Gregory.
Police charged Gregory and Alan with vulnerable adult abuse causing death and animal cruelty charges.
