PHOENIX - A three-car accident in central Phoenix has left one person dead and two others injured.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Scott McDonald said one person was pronounced dead at the scene near 39th Avenue and McDowell Road in Phoenix.

According to police, a Nissan passenger car was traveling west on McDowell Road when it swerved into the eastbound lanes of traffic at a high rate of speed.

The Nissan struck a Chevy SUV and then hit a large utility truck. The truck over-turned and the SUV hit another car coming out of a private drive.

The passenger of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The driver of the Nissan, and another passenger in the back seat were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the utility truck and the SUV were not injured.

On Friday police identified the man who died as 29-year-old Joseph W. Stroud.

Police said the driver of the Nissan, 22-year-old Corina Mase Ek, was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on manslaughter, aggravated assault and endangerment charges. She was suspected of being impaired by drugs at the time of the collision.
