PHOENIX - Phoenix police are looking into whether an early morning fire may have been set to try and cover up a murder.
The fire started in a downstairs unit at the Starlight Apartments near Camelback Road and 22nd Avenue.
Late Thursday afternoon, Phoenix police homicide detectives showed up to the complex looking for clues about a recent murder.
Fire investigators tell ABC15 it appears someone intentionally set the fire based on where it started and the way it started.
Phoenix police said the fire may be connected to the murder of 29-year-old Ramon Reed who died at a Valley hospital after being shot last weekend.
A police spokesperson said after the murder, they received an anonymous tip the murder may have happened at the apartment complex.
A fire spokesman said when the first crews arrived they found a bedroom on fire and flames coming out the window.
They were able to knock the fire down quickly, but there is smoke damage to some of the other apartments.
A neighbor told ABC15 he woke up, smelled smoke and got his family out of the apartment. He then began knocking on the doors of other units.
Officials say no one was hurt.
Twelve units have been affected and the Red Cross is helping 13 people who have been displaced from their homes.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
At this point, police say they did not have a suspect in the fire or murder.
