PHOENIX - Investigators are working to determine what started a fire at a downtown Phoenix retirement home Saturday night.
Crews responded just before 10 p.m. to the Burkeshire retirement home on McDowell Road near 13th Street where they found smoke throughout the first floor, according to fire officials.
The fire was reportedly isolated to a wall in the dining room. A nurse reported she smelled smoke and saw flames from the kitchen.
Forty two residents and a nurse were evacuated and evaluated by firefighters and police. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Only one person was hurt and that was a police officer who cut his hand breaking into a window. He is going to the hospital for stitches.
Authorities say they also rescued a dog, four cats and two birds.
Red Cross workers have responded to help with shelter for the evacuees. City buses are being used to help move the evacuated residents to other facilities.
