PHOENIX - Police are investigating after a decomposed body was found floating in a Phoenix canal Sunday morning.
According to Lt. Stan Hoover, the body was discovered around 9:20 a.m. in the canal near 38th Street and Camelback.
The person who discovered the body told police they saw something in the canal that looked like a "body wrapped in burlap."
When dive teams recovered the body, they said it was not wrapped in burlap, but was fully clothed and wearing a hoodie sweatshirt.
Hoover said it is too early to tell if the victim is male or female, or if they believe foul play was involved.
Police said due to the condition of the body, it was clear it had been in the water for "quite a while."
The body was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine identity and cause of death.
