Arpaio sends letter to Craigslist CEO

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has fired off a letter to the CEO of Craigslist after two men were arrested earlier this month for soliciting sex with animals on the popular website.

Arpaio said in a Tuesday news release that Craigslist provides a "mechanism" to facilitate criminal activity.

Last month sheriff's detectives arrested a Valley elementary school teacher and a handyman on charges of conspiracy to commit bestiality.

An undercover investigation was set up after detectives learned the suspects were using Craigslist to engage in the illegal sex acts.

A meeting was set up through computer communications in which the suspects believed they were meeting the owners of dogs to have sex with the animals at a hotel. They were taken into custody at the hotel.

In his letter to Buckmaster, Arpaio said, "While Craigslist may not be committing a criminal act, you are undoubtedly providing a mechanism to facilitate obvious criminal activity."

Arpaio said he hopes Buckmaster takes his advice seriously and that "it is sad people would utilize technology to take advantage of animals like this."
