PHOENIX - A man who killed his stepfather and tried to kill his grandparents has been sentenced to life in prison.
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge handed down the sentence to 32-year-old Alexander Willeford on Friday.
A jury found Willeford guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Willeford's stepfather, Dirk Willeford, and guilty of two counts of attempted murder.
The judge also sentenced him to 42 years in prison on top of his life sentence for the attempted murder counts.
Police say Willeford killed his stepfather on April 24, 2009, in Scottsdale by stabbing him in the throat with a hunting knife after he denied owing his stepson money.
Police say two days later, Willeford went to his grandparents' home to kill his 79-year-old grandmother. While he was attacking his her with the hunting knife, his 81-year-old grandfather walked in and was attacked.
