PHOENIX - An Arizona jail inmate who recently fled from work detail in the Phoenix metropolitan area has been caught in New Mexico.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said 20-year-old Jairo Contrereas was found Thursday afternoon in Santa Fe. They say he'll be extradited back to Phoenix soon to face additional charges.
Authorities say Contrereas was at a minimum-security jail in Phoenix for minor burglary charges and was about to be released on work furlough.
He reportedly left a jail work jail undetected in an oversized laundry cart almost two weeks ago.
Contrereas was found after sheriff's detectives tracked and traced his girlfriend's cellphone to an address in Santa Fe.
Sheriff's detectives contacted the U.S. Marshal's Office in Albuquerque and they located Contrereas. He was arrested after a brief car chase.
