PHOENIX - As Arizonans celebrate the last long weekend of summer, AAA wants to make sure drivers get home safely if they've been drinking.
"As Arizonans enjoy end of summer festivities this weekend, we want to discourage them from getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking," said AAA Arizona Director of Communication and Public Affairs Linda Gorman.
Launched in May 2009, "Tipsy Tow" provides a one-way ride for a driver, one passenger and their vehicle at no charge for up to 10 miles, according to AAA. Motorists can expect to be charged the towing company's standard rate for trips longer than 10 miles.
The service will not be provided to drivers requesting a tow to another drinking establishment, other than their home. A tow to a hotel may be allowed if the motorist is or plans to be a guest.
To use the service, drivers, passengers, party hosts, bartenders or restaurant managers should call 1-800-HELP (1-800-222-4357) between 6 p.m. Sunday, September 5 and 6 a.m. Monday September 6 and say that they need a "Tipsy Tow."
"Tipsy Tow provides a simple solution for getting motorists home safely while making the roads safer for everyone," Gorman said.
According to AAA, a first-time DUI conviction can cost a motorist more than $10,000 in fines, penalties, legal fees and increased insurance costs.
AAA says that according to the Governor's Office, Arizona's DUI task force made more than 430 driving under the influence arrests over the Fourth of July weekend this year.
