PHOENIX - Dozens of Phoenix officers and firefighters that were preparing to hit the road Wednesday, to help in areas hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy were deactivated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Wednesday night.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Jacobs said the teams were called back around 7 p.m. Arizona time.

Jacobs said "things are better than anticipated and this is a clean up mission rather than search and rescue."

Meanwhile, a retired Phoenix-area psychologist is headed to New York to help in American Red Cross relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Martha Iskyan of Fountain Hills was set to fly to Philadelphia Wednesday and then drive to New York. She's expected to spend at least two weeks supervising volunteers providing mental health services to evacuees in the area.
