Police search for clues in Valley yo-yo champion Nathan DeWitt's death

PHOENIX - Police are looking for a suspect in a shooting that killed a 23-year-old Phoenix man who was a well-known yo-yo champion.
 
Police and Phoenix Fire crews responded to a rollover crash near 28th Street and Bell Road late Christmas night and found an SUV on its side.

They say Nathan DeWitt crawled out of the vehicle and said "I've been shot."

DeWitt died later at a hospital. Police said it's still unclear if DeWitt died from the shooting wound, injuries from the crash, or both.
 
Sgt. Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Department said it is possible DeWitt was at a Christmas party before the accident. Police do not have a suspect or a motive at this time.
 
DeWitt was well-known for performing yo-yo tricks and for winning competitions in the Valley and in Washington where he once lived.
 
He crashed just a couple blocks from his parents' home where police said he lived.

Julius Szakolczai, owner of Allyoyo.com, in Chandler, holds free yo-yo classes and said DeWitt was one of his students.

"He was a nice kid, always had a smile on his face and always helped people," he said.

Skakolczai said the news of his death has really taken a toll on the small, yet tight-knit yo-yo community and said the young kids are impacted the most.

"I'm trying to tell them not to worry too much about it," he said. "I tell them not to speculate until we know everything that happened."

A man in the neighborhood where DeWitt crashed told ABC15 that he heard three or four shots that night. It is unclear where DeWitt was shot, or if anyone actually witnessed the crime.
 
A family member would not go on camera but seemed baffled by what happened, saying that they had been with DeWitt earlier in the day and that there was a relatively short period of time prior to the shooting that they were unaware of his whereabouts.
