PHOENIX - Sarah Maurer has been a Child Life Specialist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for the past three years.
“We make sure that the child understands at their level what’s going on with their body, what they’re doing here what part of their body is sick, and what we are doing to help them get better,” said Sarah.
Sarah can relate to these patients because she has been in their shoes before.
The journey at Phoenix Children’s Hospital began when Sarah was born. She was born 10 weeks early and spent the first month of her life in the NICU.
Over the 30-year span of the hospital, Sarah was there throughout, even in the beginning as one of the first patients.
However Sarah’s struggles continued. When she was eight she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Battling hard, she overcame Wilms’ tumor and was cured one year later.
Sarah has spent many years walking in and out of the doors of Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Now, it is time for her to give back. “I know that I am giving back to a place that gave me so much for so many years of my life,” she said.
