PHOENIX - Police say an elderly man who was struck by a car Monday night has died.

Police said in a news release early Tuesday morning that 87-year-old Edward Frances Legge was crossing in the middle of the block when he was hit by a white Audi near 19th Avenue and Cactus Road around 6 p.m.

Officers said the man was not in a crosswalk when he was hit.

Legge was transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition where he died.

Detectives determined the driver of the vehicle was not impaired. The driver was not injured.

Police say there were 34 deadly pedestrian collisions in 2011 and so far this year there have been 26.
