Dump truck driver Michael Jakscht on trial for deaths of 4 motorcyclists

PHOENIX - A jury could decide Monday if a Phoenix dump truck driver is guilty of killing four people.

The closing arguments started at 10:30 a.m. in the trial of Michael Jakscht. He's accused of running over a group of motorcyclists while high on meth in March of 2010. Jakscht’s lawyers maintain that he had a bad reaction from diet pills.

Jakscht was driving a dump truck for Blue Sky Sanitation on Carefree Highway when he slammed into a group of motorcyclists stopped at a red light .

Four people were killed and several others injured. Jakscht walked away from the crash and into handcuffs.

The 48-year-old faces 16 charges, including four counts of manslaughter.

Last year, a mistrial was declared when the jury failed to reach a verdict.

Phoenix fire Captain Ernie Lizarraga was injured in the crash and continues to deal with a brain injury.

"I remember where we were going, we just left a gas station, and we were stopped at the stop light and that's when it happened right there," Lizarraga said.

During the trial, Lizarraga took the stand to testify.

With his daughter and wife at his side, Lizarraga said it's his "two" families that have gotten him through the tough days.

He credits his own family for being supportive along with his "family" at the Phoenix Fire Department and other fire departments across the Valley.

Depending on how long the jury needs to deliberate, there could be a verdict later Monday, or later this week.
