PHOENIX - The Department of Public Safety said one person was killed after a car drove off the Loop 202 overpass and crashed in the northbound lanes of State Route 51 early Saturday morning.
DPS officials said the accident happened around 2:30 a.m.
Authorities said a car was driving westbound on the 202 and crashed into another vehicle causing it to go over the wall and land on the SR 51 at McDowell.
After the car landed on SR 51, a person driving northbound hit the vehicle causing it to burst into flames.
Off-duty Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy Doug Matteson was driving by and tried to save the person in the burning car, but did not have the proper tools to extricate the victim.
Officers said the fire was so bad it could take days to positively identify the person who died.
The people in the vehicle who hit the burning car sustained minor injuries.
