We all remember how much fun it was to ride a bike when we were young. But what if riding a bike could make a difference and help families in need?
On Friday, brothers Ethan and Reid Maurice were cheered on by dozens of supporters at Phoenix Children’s hospital, sending them off on their journey.
Their journey involves a 4,233 mile bike ride across the country from Virginia to Oregon. The reason is to help raise funds for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The hospital has been an important part of 21-year-old Ethan’s life.
At age three, Ethan was diagnosed with a rare blood clotting disorder in the back of his brain. This has required Ethan to constantly be in and out of PCH for the last 18 years.
During his junior year of high school Ethan had a stroke. He was placed in a medically induced coma for three days, and spent nine days in the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It took several months of rehab for Ethan to regain his speech and motor skills.
Five years later, Ethan is getting ready for the ride of his life. His 16-year-old brother Reid will be accompanying him on their trek across the country.
The two hope to raise $42,000 dollars for Phoenix Children’s Hospital to help families in need.
The brothers leave on May 15, and hope to arrive in Oregon sometime in August.
