AHWATUKEE, AZ - WiL Power Challenge helps young people lose weight and learn how to live a healthier lifestyle. It's a free program that's open to children and teens who are overweight or obese. WiL stands for Winning is Losing.

Sponsored by Foothills Sports Medicine Centers, children meet with a trainer three times a week and a dietician weekly. The program lasts 20 weeks.

Karen Cummings, Board President with WiL Power Challenge, says children have a support system and parents are educated about food choices and exercise.

"It's not just about weight loss," Cummings said.

During training, children participate in various activities, like running, obstacle courses, and water balloon fights. Parents also participate to learn about healthy food choices.

WiL Power Challenge is set up like a competition.

Andrew McNeal, 15, won back in March. McNeal was 195 pounds when he started. He says he wasn't active and worried about getting diabetes which runs in the family.

His mother says she wasn't aware of how junk food in the house was affecting her son's weight until he started educating her.

McNeal lost 60 pounds in the process. He says it was hard work but well worth it.

McNeal says he's more active.  He runs, bikes, and hikes regularly. He now teaches his friends about a balanced diet and the benefits of exercise. McNeal says the program changed his life.

To qualify, children will need a doctor's note. For more information, visit the website.
