AHWATUKEE - An Ahwatukee mom has started an online petition to ban the private purchase of assault weapons.
Ellen Davis started the petition one day after the shooting massacre in Aurora, Colorado . She said she wants to protect children.
"I have a son who's 21 at ASU. He and his friends go to the movies. My initial thought is that could have been him," said Davis.
The petition asks for the reinstatement of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban which prevents the private purchase of semi-automatic weapons and ammunition.
"I'm not against people owning guns, but I would like to have common sense gun laws to protect people from getting killed," said Davis.
10,000 more signatures are needed before she can take the petition to Congress.
