AHWATUKEE, AZ - Nick Selby delivered the convocation speech to the incoming freshman class at Georgia Tech that has gone viral on YouTube.
Nick's parents Tom and Laurie say their son has been has always been a bit out of the ordinary and the speech didn't surprise them.
He is now studying Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech.
“There’s a lot in there that’s just fun and then there's a lot profound truth and I think putting it all together to get people to listen to those profound truths,” said Tom. “That's what his goal was and he did it to perfection."
Just days after Nick delivered the speech; rumors started swirling on the internet that Nick had plagiarized the speech from a former debate coach.
“It's annoying because it was such a mutual effort between the people involved in it,” said Tom. “They're fine with it, they helped him write it.”
“He liked the speech so much he took it and re-did it and became this awesome person,” said Lucas Selby, Nick’s younger brother.
Lucas says his favorite thing about his older brother is his desire to be nice to everyone,
“It’s how helpful he is to everyone,” said Lucas. ‘Whether it’s a five minute homework problem for me or one for someone else, or if it’s for someone with Speech and Debate…he always wants to help.”
The teen graduated from Desert Vista High School a few years ago.
