SEDONA, Ariz. - Sheriff's detectives are investigating what appears to be a double murder near Sedona Friday.
Dwight D'Evelyn with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to an area of Highway 89A at a scenic overlook around 11:30 a.m. where they found the bodies of a man and woman in a red Subaru sedan.
The man and woman were both shot to death by a shooter who was outside of the vehicle, he said.
Detectives were working to identify the couple whose vehicle is registered to an out of state address.
It's unclear if they were killed at random, or if they were targeted for other reasons.
"This is very unusual," said D'Evelyn.
Detectives are on scene and asking anyone who was in the area recently to call the sheriff's office at 928-771-3260, even if you think the information may not be significant.
They're hoping someone can help them determine when that vehicle arrived.
Callers may also make an anonymous report to Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-392-3232.
