SEONDA, AZ - A woman and her son were found with gunshot wounds to the head propped up against a log off the side of a road near Sedona Tuesday.

The bodies were reportedly found on Highway 89A near the Oak Creek Canyon Overlook.

According to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, a woman came into the Overlook Visitor Center to report the bodies on the side of the road.

When authorities arrived, they found a vehicle belonging to either the mother or her son parked on the side of the road with the bodies nearby, officials said.

Coconino County Sheriff's deputies found a handgun in the son's lap and what they believe to be two suicide notes near the bodies.

After reading the notes and examining the evidence, officials said detectives are investigating the possibility that the woman shot herself first, and her son followed suit with the same gun.

The bodies were taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office for further examination.

The investigation is ongoing.
