FREDONIA, AZ - Authorities are using helicopters and tracking dogs in the search for a Fredonia-area man who allegedly shot and killed a Utah sheriff's deputy near the Arizona-Utah border.
A Coconino County sheriff's spokeswoman says authorities were chasing 23-year-old Scott Curley on foot when he shot a Kane County (Utah) sheriff's deputy with a high-powered scope rifle Thursday afternoon.
Coconino County authorities in northern Arizona announced Thursday night that the deputy had died, but did not release any other details. They say the deputy's name is being withheld until his family is notified.
Local, state and federal authorities are assisting in the search for Curley along with tribal police officers.
The incident began around 2:20 p.m. Thursday about three miles east of Fredonia, a small town just south of the Utah border in Arizona.
Authorities say Curley is familiar with the remote desert area and they plan to drop flares from helicopters to use in the night search.
