ALPINE, AZ - The massive Wallow Fire in eastern Arizona has climbed to nearly 444,000 acres, officials said Sunday morning.
Numbers also show the fire is now 10 percent contained.
Burnout operations and holding operations continued along Highway 273 near Greer and officials say the DC-10 completed two successful drops on the west flank near Greer.
Officials also said the spread of the fire into New Mexico was due to burnout operations toward Luna, New Mexico.
The biggest fire in Arizona history was the Rodeo-Chediski Fire, which burned nearly 470,000 acres in 2002.
The Wallow Fire could top 550,000 acres before it's done because crews may have to burn another 150,000 acres to contain the blaze, according to fire official Jim Whittington.
Wallow Fire spokesman Jerome MacDonald said at Saturday's 9 p.m. media briefing, crews feel good about the fire lines, especially in Nutrioso.
"It's been chasing us around but today we feel very optimistic," McDonald said. He said there were no spot fires Saturday.
An increase in winds and low humidity were expected to play major factors in fighting the fire through the weekend.
Saturday night's activities include structure protection, continued burnout and mop-up operations to strengthen containment lines, and patrol for spot fires.
McDonald said there would be the same staffing level in Greer for the next two days.
