PAGE, AZ - The Arizona Department of Transportation is deploying equipment to drill shafts to help determine whether it can proceed with repairing a stretch of US 89 that was closed when pavement buckled.

ADOT says the shafts will be used to measure movement of the slope where the buckling tore up big sections of pavement on the highway south of Page.

According to ADOT, once the measurement work is done, the next step would be to begin designing a potential repair project.

But ADOT says the first step is determine whether the ground has stopped moving and is safe again.

Traffic is being detoured around the closed stretch of US 89.

ADOT spokesman Dustin Krugel says it's too early to predict when the highway will reopen.
