FLAGSTAFF, AZ - Authorities in northern Arizona say a Valle man is in custody in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.
Coconino County Sheriff's officials say 25-year-old Jose Zenaido Acevedo was arrested Monday after deputies responded to a report of an unconscious child at a home in Valle, south of the Grand Canyon.
Authorities say Acevedo was living at the home with the child and her biological mother. The woman left the girl in Acevedo's care while she worked.
They say the girl had injuries that included severe head trauma and died Tuesday night at the Flagstaff Medical Center.
Sheriff's officials say Acevedo originally was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and aggravated assault.
They say he's now facing a homicide charge and remains incarcerated at the county Detention Facility.
