FLAGSTAFF, AZ - Authorities have arrested a suspect in four sexual assault cases in Flagstaff.
Gregory Woody Jr., 22, was taken into custody around 1:45 on Thursday.
Flagstaff police say Woody is suspected in sexual assaults that go back as far as January 18, 2013.
In that first case, police say Woody picked up an adult female in the downtown area and took her to an isolated area where he violently physically and sexually assaulted her.
The other three assaults occurred on July 13, July 21 and August 8.
Police say that since the July 21 incident, the Flagstaff Police Department with the help of other law enforcement agencies stepped up their presence in uniform and undercover in the downtown area.
On Friday, August 9, two undercover female officers noticed a man matching the description of the suspect who appeared to be suspicious.
One of the officers approached the suspect and he began walking with her. He asked her to sit with him in an unlit area, touched her back under her shirt, tried several times to kiss her and repeatedly asked the officer if she wanted a ride outside the downtown area.
He eventually threw her over his shoulder, but she was able to escape.
The undercover officer got the suspect’s license plate number and he was later seen following the officer after they had parted.
Police located Woody’s apartment and vehicle and began surveillance on him.
He was later contacted by a detective and interviewed and submitted to a DNA swab sample.
A few days later the DNA results came back, connecting Woody to the first three sexual assaults.
Arrest and search warrants were obtained and Woody was taken into custody.
Flagstaff police say the investigation will continue for several more weeks, and they will compare their investigation with authorities in Colorado and Montana where similar incidents have occurred.
The Coconino County Attorney’s Office is preparing the case for charging, police said.
