FLAGSTAFF, AZ - Authorities say they've rescued two Northern Arizona University students who got stranded on the Paria Plateau in Flagstaff.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office received a call of an overdue NAU student conducting an air sampling study with her roommate on the plateau about 8 a.m. Monday.
The two female students left Flagstaff for the plateau near Houserock Valley for a school project Sunday morning with intentions of returning that evening.
While traveling in the deep sand, their vehicle became disabled in an area where cell phone coverage wasn't available.
Deputies from the Page and Fredonia substations along with a state Bureau of Land Management ranger responded to the plateau.
The students were found about 10:45 a.m. about 11 1/2 miles away from their vehicle near Pine Tree Pocket.
