SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Over 400 athletes participated Saturday in Special Olympics Arizona’s Third Annual Red Rock Sprint and Unified Triathlon at DC Ranch Village Health Club and Spa in Scottsdale.

Smiles and great sportsmanship filled the faces of race participants and volunteers, as the general theme of the day was to have fun.

The 225 Individual Sprint Triathletes started off race day with a 300yd swim, 20k bike and 5k run.

Athletes began the serpentine-style swim in the pool in 15 second increments, allowing plenty of room and distance between each other.

From the swim, they ran to the transition area for their bicycles and the bike course, then back to transition for the run.

The 250 Unified Triatletes finished off race day with a 50yd swim, 2.5mi bike, and .5mi run.

Unified partners cheered on their team mates before, during and after each leg of the race.

Everyone was greeted at the finish line by volunteers, cow bells and snacks from local vendors.

An award ceremony was held in the basket ball courts of DC Ranch Village, where participants received medals.

Special Olympics Arizona was able to raise approximately $100,000 through donations and funds raised by race participants.

The funds raised in events held by Special Olympics Arizona help to support programs such as: Healthy Athletes, Unified Sports, Young Athletes and Family Resource Council.

With over 180,000 people in Arizona with an intellectual disability, Special Olympics Arizona always welcomes new athletes, volunteers and coaches to assist with the 24 sports and 172 year round competitions it hosts.
