SCOTTSDALE, AZ - City leaders in Scottsdale are looking at a noise ordinance after hearing complaints for years.
The noise level would be capped at 68 decibels, which is like listening to a lawn mower 100 feet away.
Many residents complain about new nightclubs and bars moving into the area bringing louder music and crowds with them. But not everyone is on board.
"If you can't have your fun and music in Old Town then why have an Old Town Scottsdale?" said one man.
"I don't think the noise has changed. I think tolerance has changed" said a woman.
The man with the plan is Councilman Wayne Ecton. He is trying to strike a balance between commerce and community with his plan.
It would include training for police officers. "They wouldn't only go looking for the problem but if they heard one they would check it out." he said.
Fines could go up to $2,500 but the criminal charge of disturbing the peace would be lowered to a civil penalty of unreasonable noise.
The council will vote on the proposal September 28th.
