SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Rescue workers had their hands full after being called to a Valley home where a rabbit population had taken over the back yard.

Rescue crews expected to find about 40 rabbits but after three days of trapping they found themselves face to face with more than a 100 rabbits and the number continues to grow.

"They can get pregnant as young as four months old. They can have babies every 30 days and can get pregnant the day they give birth," said Kelly Ames, Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary's Executive Director.

Ames said the average rabbit gives birth to 4 to 6 babies.

The rabbits were living in overcrowded cages and underground burrows, according to a news release.

Ames said the homeowner initially only had a few rabbits she had rescued. The homeowner had the males rabbits separated from the female rabbits but Ames said somebody came in and let all of the male rabbits out.

More are still in burrows as the female rabbits have gone underground to escape the heat to have their babies, according to Ames.

"We are faced with a growing number as the females have their litters," Ames said. "Many of the rabbits have serious medical issues."

Ames said the first priority is to separate the male from female rabbits to eliminate the potential for growth and to seek medical attention for those most in need.

The animal sanctuary has already started spaying and neutering the animals and are looking for foster and post op recovery homes.

Workers said they are contacting shelters across the country for help.

"Our hope is that over time, the rabbits can be rehabilitated and placed into their forever homes," Ames said.

Emergency rescue workers are asking for monetary donations, as well as supplies, volunteers and vets willing to help with medical issues.
