SCOTTSDALE, AZ - An arrest was made Friday after authorities said a woman died after being found with chest wounds at a Scottsdale apartment complex.
Scottsdale police said the victim, identified as 23-year-old Crystal MacMartin, was working as an escort and was attacked with a knife by Joseph Michael Matthews, 25.
"There was no pulse, there was no respiration, but I told 911 that I was going to continue compression 'til the police or fire department showed up and I did," said Ray, who wouldn't give his last name, but identified himself as a maintenance manager at the Scottsdale Mission apartment complex.
Ray said a man doing landscaping work in the complex saw the woman running from what he believes is the man who lives in an apartment in building 13.
Scottsdale Police Sgt. Mark Clark said MacMartin suffered laceration wounds at the complex near 92nd Street and Shea Boulevard, and was found about 20 feet away from the apartment door. There was a trail of blood, he said.
"They said, 'well he's hitting her,'" Ray said the landscaping crew told him.
Ray said he got a bicycle and rushed over to where MacMartin was lying on her stomach bleeding from her chest area.
"She was in bad shape. There was blood everywhere," Ray said.
Despite her condition, Ray performed CPR with the hopes she would make it. MacMartin died at a nearby hospital a short while later, police said.
Clark said blood was the evidence of a violent altercation inside the apartment.
"I was coming out of my door, going to my mother's," said Rosemary Protocollo.
She heard some screams, but wasn't quite sure what it was.
"It's tragic but a good reminder we should all the take the time to get to know our neighbors," Protocollo said.
The investigation is continuing and at this time the motive is not yet known.
