SCOTTSDALE, AZ - A man was taken to the hospital early Saturday after he accidentally shot himself during a traffic stop in Scottsdale.
Lt. Kempshner of Scottsdale police said Mesa officers conducting a DUI task force near Main and Scottsdale roads initially pulled the driver of a truck over for suspected impaired driving.
As they approached the vehicle, officers saw the passenger fumbling with something near his feet and seconds later a gun went off.
According to Kempshner, the passenger was trying to conceal the weapon underneath his seat when it went off and shot him in the leg.
Officers reportedly believed they were being fired upon, so they drew their weapons and called for assistance from other agencies before determining the man's situation.
The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital.
Kempshner said the driver passed all sobriety tests and was released, as was a second passenger also inside the truck.
