SCOTSDALE, AZ - A 25-year-old Miss Arizona contestant was diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive ovarian cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
Kristina Anderson grew up in Atwood, Illinois, graduated top of her class in high school and graduated from the University of Illinois.
The Illini cheerleader moved to Scottsdale to get her Master’s Degree at Grand Canyon University.
Recently, she was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer that is not covered through her insurance, due to an exclusion.
"It was a shock," said Anderson. "Sadness, anger, all different types of emotions."
Anderson is undergoing her fourth round of chemotherapy and in between treatments, she is preparing for the Miss Arizona pageant, according Sandy LaDuke, office manager for Dr. Deborah Wilson. The pageant is in late November.
"The Miss Arizona pageant is a little different than the county fair I'm used to," said Kristina.
She's hoping her journey for the crown will be an inspiration to others going through a tough time. "Just be positive and be grateful for what you have."
To raise money for her treatment and living expenses, there will be a fundraiser on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria in Scottsdale.
It's located at 4000 N.Scottsdale Road near Indian School Road.
There will be a silent auction and a $20 donation includes pizza, salad and a fountain drink.
