SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Fire officials say a dog managed to escape a burning apartment late Thursday night in Scottsdale.
The fire started around 10:30 p.m. at a complex near 68th Street and Osborn Road, said Scottsdale fire Captain Dave Folio.
When crews arrived, flames were blowing out of one of the windows, he said.
The resident staying in the apartment was not home at the time, Folio said.
But the tenant's dog went outside through a doggy door and is OK, he said. The dog was waiting on the back patio, and crews were able to rescue him.
Folio initially said a cat was also in the apartment but was not found.
The tenant later contacted ABC15 to say her cat was found Saturday in a neighbor's backyard.
The second floor apartment is a total loss, but the tenant is getting a lot of support from her family and friends.
A unit below, occupied by one person, suffered major water damage, Folio said. That tenant has also been displaced.
A neighbor said a third unit had severe smoke damage and forced another occupant to leave for the night.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The incident is under investigation.
