Downtown Scottsdale to beef up security

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - The City of Scottsdale and bar owners in the downtown area are planning on increasing security after a bouncer was killed two weeks ago.

The two groups met behind closed doors at The Mint Monday afternoon to hash out ideas.

"Things are good down here now, but we are looking at further ways to improve it for everyone," said Scottsdale Mayor W.J. "Jim" Lane.

Beloved bouncer Tyrice Thompson was killed outside Martini Ranch late last month.

Security enhancements may include more staffing in the establishments and parking lots, especially at closing time. These numbers will be dictated by the number of customers.

In addition, they plan for proper training for security staff including crowd control and de-escalation techniques.

Each bar will be required to submit a security plan to the city every two years.

And the city will do a "light audit" to make sure there is proper lighting in and around bars and may require bar owners to have minimum lighting outside the bars.

"Security is our main issue, not that it is bad, but when something happens we have to address it," said Less Corieri, President of the Scottsdale Entertainment District.

Mayor Lane said the ideas will be reviewed, then formalized and could become part of city ordinance in the next few weeks.
